Avoiding Business Credit Scams
I cannot believe that I am actually writing this post, but with the news scaring us with images of a depression(i hate the news), people are getting desperate and the scammers are coming out in droves.
I got a wonderful email today thanking me for all my posts and help with business credit and this is really what keeps me going. As you all know, all this information on my blog is very valuable and I give it away. I also answer many questions that people ask(although 90% of the questions are answered in my book) without complaining or asking for payment. Along with the thankyou was mention of a website where a guy was selling shelf corps for 10K a pop and more and promising 500K in credit and more. Now, let me start by saying that this dude has balls to have a website claiming these absurdities. I wish we could all call them out. Let’s do this. After you read this post, in the comments seciont, post the name of any known scammers that you know of.
Anyway, back to the scammer at hand. The reader had the insight to ask probing questions that stumped the dude and then he claimed he had better things to do and left. I know that I do not answer all questions on time because I am pretty swamped right now but I am working on giving better customer service, especially to the guys who pay. Again, let me get back on track. I want to say something that is cliche and you all know and heard this before, “If it seems to good to be true it is”.
The sad thing is, business credit has been mistified in its marketing to people assume its an un opened box with the elixa of life inside. In many cases it is an upopened box with men cool things inside, but the fountain of youth and the tree of money definitely are not inside.
Let us make a list of things that we will do before asking me what I think of a specific vendor. These simple precautions will help you to stay clear of all these scammers.
1. Try to stay away from craigslist. Craigslist is a free classified ad thingy and thats great but anyone can get on there. If you search google for what you are looking for and you use one of the companies on the first 1-3 pages, chances are they put out money or time to be there so that helps with eliminating scammers. That does not mean that a scammer cannot get to the first page but it reduces the risk.
2. If the person does not have a website, simply do not do business with them. I do not say this because I have a website. A website in todays world can cost as little as $5 a month. If the “Company” does not have the time or money to develop a website, or claims its in development, they are not in the industry long enough to solve your problem.
3. Look for logical answers to your questions. This is key because we keep forgetting that business credit is not magic. We want and need this holy grail of money to deliver us from our problems, but let us face it, IT DOES NOT EXIST. Business credit is an awesome tool, but think about it. If you cant get a 300K mortage with a 700 credit score and no money down, what bank in their right F*^&in mind is gonna lend you 500K with no PG and unsecured. WTF. When you ask a questio, make sure it is precisely answered and not merely touched and dodged.
Sorry for the long post but I HATE SCAMMERS.
